Overview

The QNX Platform for Digital Cockpits is the WORLD’S FIRST digital cockpit solution that empowers automakers to provide the in-car experience drivers want, with the security, safety, and reliability they need.
The QNX Platform for Digital Cockpits enables automakers to offer a reliable and secure QNX-based digital instrument cluster and infotainment system that provides access to the latest Android-based applications such as Google Maps and Google Play Music, all from a single SoC. BlackBerry’s ISO 26262 ASIL-D safety-certified QNX Hypervisor for Safety ensures the multiple operating systems powering the cluster, infotainment, and other driver information systems can safely co-exist on a single SoC and safety and non-safety related functions are isolated from one another. This isolation is important because if an application crashes, is compromised, or needs to be updated, it will not impact critical driving or safety functions.
Combining BlackBerry’s safety-certified QNX Hypervisor for Safety, QNX Platform for Instrument Clusters, QNX CAR Platform for Infotainment, and the ability to support Android for infotainment, the cockpit solution demonstrates that it’s possible to combine various automotive systems of mixed criticality onto one platform and to support popular consumer apps without compromising safety and security. To mitigate potential Android vulnerabilities, security measures have been implemented to prevent the direct exchange of data between Android and safety-critical systems and networks such as the Controller Area Network (CAN). In addition, the solution can help accelerate automakers’ development timelines and reduce the risk and cost of moving projects from research to production.
In short, BlackBerry QNX have built the world’s first safety-certified digital cockpit solution that enables the implementation of Android on a single SoC in a secure manner. We believe that being able to provide this level of security will be a key differentiator for automakers.

How we are different

• Connected and autonomous vehicles require some of the most complex software ever developed, creating a significant challenge for automakers who must ensure that the software delivers an experience that consumers want, without sacrificing on the security and reliability that they need.
• Exacerbating the challenge for OEMs is the fact that as the software within a car increases so too does the attack surface for vulnerabilities and, thus, they must simultaneously harden a large and tempting attack surface for cybercriminals.
• The QNX Platform for Digital Cockpits is pivotal for the automotive industry and OEMs because, for the first time, they have a platform that provides the reliability and real-time requirements required by automotive systems while enabling the Android applications consumers want.
• Building a safe and secure multi-OS cockpit based on QNX and which supports Android provides drivers with the apps they know and love while preventing those same apps from being used as a conduit for malicious activity.
