Overview

Ed Adams, a security industry veteran and CEO of Security Innovation, a leader in software security assessment and training, has written a new book published by Wiley in February 2024, called “See Yourself in Cyber: Security Careers Beyond Hacking”.

Adams wrote the book for managers, directors, executives, policymakers, regulators, and compliance professionals with a stake in improving cybersecurity, either within an organization or across the world. It explores the breadth and depth of careers available in cybersecurity and provides a playbook for how people in a wide variety of roles both inside and outside of traditional cybersecurity can contribute to their organization’s cybersecurity infrastructure.

Through insights and advice gathered from case studies, real-world examples and interviews with more than 150 leaders including CISOs and other security practitioners, the book debunks myths and stereotypes about careers in cybersecurity. It also highlights the broad range of opportunities the industry offers to those with business, legal, communications, and other non-technical backgrounds.

As a cybersecurity strategist and educator, Adams also offers specific and practical strategies on how to find, hire and retain valuable talent that can be implemented immediately to realize real-world results.

How we are different

• The book outlines the paradox of the lack of cybersecurity talent to fill open roles that leaders frequently lament, and the inability of entry-level job seekers to find roles. Adams offers practical suggestions for how leaders can address this issue within their organizations while developing the cybersecurity leaders of tomorrow.

• Using the analogy of the Cybersecurity Color Wheel, Adams explains modern roles and responsibilities of cybersecurity professionals and the way roles not directly associated with security can improve a company’s operations and reduce risk. He also discusses the leadership skills team members will require in each role as they interact with executives, managers, and other practitioners.

• In the book, Adams promotes improved security by suggesting the adoption of better diversity and inclusion policies and offers prescriptive, actionable guidance to managers and leaders who want to attract, build, retain, and develop diverse talent in cybersecurity.
