Overview
Gartner states, “through 2020, driven by the increasing risk of a data breach, more than 50% of enterprises will purchase enterprise-wide encryption products, which is a significant increase from fewer than 20% today.” The increase of data creation outside of traditional datacenters makes edge-based encryption a proactive approach to mitigate risks and loss.
StorMagic SvSAN with Data Encryption is the most cost-effective encryption solution for storing data in edge computing environments. The software-based solution uses military-grade encryption algorithms that eliminate the need for operating system or hypervisor-level encryption without requiring expensive, self-encrypting disk drives (SEDs). End users obtain a simple, inexpensive way to protect sensitive data at the edge, where servers aren’t typically located in secure datacenters. SvSAN integrates seamlessly with any key management server (KMS) through the use of the industry standard protocol, KMIP. It’s a simple way to protect sensitive data at the edge – just turn on the encryption feature and connect to any existing key manager.
There are other ways to encrypt data at higher levels in the software stack (application, database, and email encryption; website) but these require significant effort and add complexity, as each application, filesystem or hypervisor has different methods to perform encryption, all which need to be configured and managed differently. Organizations will likely employ many layers of data security, but encrypting at the storage level is simple, cost effective and adds an important layer of security.
StorMagic’s SvSAN uses a FIPS 140-2 compliant algorithm and meets the major compliance regulations without requiring expensive SEDs. Using SEDs can remove some complexity, but requires special, expensive, hard-to-procure disk drives. This adds significant cost to the solution and creates another complication for IT staffs.
