Karunakar (Karun) Addala is being nominated for the AI Security Innovator of the Year Award in recognition of his pioneering leadership in conceptualizing and launching India’s first-of-its-kind CyberAI program—a structured academic and industry framework built around the convergence of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity.

At a time when AI adoption is accelerating across critical infrastructure, defense, finance, and national systems, Karun Addala identified a significant capability gap: organizations were advancing AI deployment without equally advancing AI security, resilience, and governance frameworks. Recognizing that AI and cybersecurity can no longer function in isolation, he conceptualized CyberAI—a dual-domain model integrating:
• AI for Cybersecurity (intelligent threat detection, adaptive defense, automation)
• Cybersecurity for AI (model security, adversarial resilience, secure AI pipelines, governance and compliance)

Under his leadership, this vision was translated into a first-of-its-kind academic certification program, now successfully conducted at prestigious institution IIT Hyderabad and in process for implementation through Defence Institute for Advanced Technologies (DIAT) ,other IITs in India & Foreign Institutions in Singapore and USA.

The program has attracted international professionals and senior industry participants, and has been recognized for its academic rigor, industry alignment, and strategic relevance to national security.

The CyberAI initiative uniquely addresses:
• Adversarial AI risks and model exploitation
• AI governance and regulatory compliance
• Trustworthy and resilient AI system design
• AI-driven cyber defense for critical infrastructure
• Security architecture for next-generation AI deployments

The though process has conceptualized the innovation of AI based SOC product for critical infrastructure including power utilities, oil & gas, seaports etc.

The program’s impact extends beyond education—it establishes a new interdisciplinary domain that bridges engineering, cybersecurity operations, AI research, and national security policy.

By institutionalizing CyberAI within India’s premier technology and defense institutions, Karun Addala has:
• Created a scalable national capability framework for AI security
• Positioned India at the forefront of secure AI leadership
• Enabled cross-sector alignment between academia, defense, and industry
• Defined a structured learning pathway for future AI security professionals
