About the Passwordless Authentication category
What belongs in this category
The Passwordless Authentication category covers products that replace passwords with other ways to sign in: passkeys built on FIDO, the open industry standards for phishing-resistant sign-in, credentials bound to a device, smart cards, certificate-based sign-in, and one-time links and codes. Methods that cannot be phished make the strongest case. Typical entries remove passwords for workforce or customer sign-in, handle enrollment and recovery without falling back to a password, and cover computer sign-in as well as applications.
Products that add a second factor to a password fit Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and a product that does both can enter both. Products built on biometric traits fit Biometric Authentication, and passwordless sign-in for customers can also enter Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM).
Related categories to enter
Each category is judged separately, so you can enter a product in every category that matches what it does, with a separate nomination for each. Tailor each nomination to that category's focus. Entering several related categories gives the product more than one chance to be recognized.
How entries are judged
An independent jury of security practitioners, analysts and CISOs scores each nomination on leadership, innovation and impact. Each nomination competes in its category against organizations of similar size and region, so a mid-sized firm is not ranked against a global enterprise. Your entry package, any sponsorship and public votes do not affect the jury's scores.
Strong entries in this category show:
- Leadership — adoption at scale: users and devices moved off passwords, demanding or regulated customers, coverage across operating systems and applications.
- Innovation — a passwordless problem solved in a new way, such as account recovery with no password fallback, shared and frontline devices, or older applications that expect a password.
- Impact — results for customers: share of sign-ins without a password, password reset tickets cut, phishing-related account takeovers stopped, sign-in time saved. Give before-and-after figures.
The jury awards Gold, Silver or Bronze, or a Finalist badge, and results are published on this site and announced to the 600,000+ member Cybersecurity Insiders community. Every approved nomination also enters the separate Community Choice award, decided by public votes.
